DIY Carpet Spot Cleaner

I’ve never had to use so much spot remover as I have in the past 3 years. Kids are not nice to carpets or rugs. I used to have a bottle of store-bought spot cleaner. I liked it, and thought it did an amazing job. But I ran out, and never remembered to buy a new bottle.

The next big “accident” happened and I needed to think fast. I grabbed some baking soda and vinegar, and it got the job done. Nothing amazing. I wanted more though in a spot cleaner, and my things smelled like vinegar for a while. So I began searching and testing for a homemade spot remover recipe that would cut smells too. I’ve landed on this recipe, and it works really well. Just make sure to shake it up before each use, and don’t use too much!

  • 1 T baking soda
  • 3 T vinegar
  • 1 1/2 C water
  • 1 t dish soap
  • 15 drops tea tree oil
  • 15 drops lemongrass oil

In a dish, mix the baking soda and vinegar and let settle. Add other ingredients and pour into a spray bottle, preferably glass as essential oils can be corrosive (note: I’ve used a plastic bottle and have not had issues, but that’s not to say over time I won’t!). Spray a little on the spot to be removed, let sit for a few minutes and pat dry. If you find there is residue left over, just dab with a wet cloth.
