It’s officially gardening season here in the PNW. I’ve got 144 seed starts germinating in random places throughout my house, some light boxes being built, and we got our potatoes planted last weekend! We’ve had an unusually warm February (though not dry!) and I was able to get the potatoes panted a few weeks early! Halfway through, I had the “brilliant” idea to record what we were doing for a blog post. Sometimes, writing the instructions and process of things can be daunting. Even downright confusing. So hopefully this video helps, if you’re wanting to plant potatoes in a tower. I warn you, it’s not anywhere close to being a professional video! I recorded it on my iPhone while planting/watching a toddler/watching a puppy/bossing Ranchero Luis around. But it’s a nice glimpse into our lives, and gives you the whole process! So, don’t judge me too much. Just love it. š
Last year was my first time growing potatoes, and we did it in a tower. We had great success, about 30 pound yield from 4 different varieties of potatoes. Last year, we had a few varieties that aren’t great for towers, so this year we made sure to get varieties that layer great! We picked All Blue, Butterball, Yellow Finn, and Katahdin.
Potatoes can be planted through Spring in colder climates, and year round in hot climates.
What you’ll need:
- Galvanized wire fencing
- Zip Ties
- Straw
